Originally released in 1978 after the success of Dreamboat Annie and Little Queen, this gem collection of leftovers from the Dreamboat Annie sessions plus live recordings is a very satisfying listening experience and gives a different perspective of the band. One of my favorite song on this album is "Without You", which was originally a smash hit for Harry Nilsson back in 1971. This recording put emotion and passion into the song and really hits the ball out of the park. The title track has always been a favorite as well. The extended instrumental tag at the end of Magazine is what makes this song. It is hard for some bands to make a 6 minute song develop and go somewhere, not so with Magazine. I also like the rough rock sound of Devil Delight. Rock is Heart''s specialty and definately comes across in Devil Delight. "Just The Wine" and "Here Song" displays the other side of Heart that they do ballads and love songs just as well. The radio hit was "Heartless" and was not really given the credit it deserves. "Mother Earth Blues" is a blues-rock number that gives you that feel of the late 60''s, early 70''s rock. Being a big fan of Led Zeppelin, they found it necessary to pay tribute by incorporating "You Shook Me" into the song. Last we get to "I''ve Got the Music in Me", which was a huge hit for the KikiDee Band in 1974. Heart''s live version here has just as much energy as the original and makes a great finale for the album.
Now, as for the CD version that I received, I got the CEMA 1995 version. It may not be as good as a later remastered version, but until I can get an original copy of the vinyl LP version on Mushroom Records this will have to do.

I am going to try to describe the original recording possibly in the most detail of all of the previous reviewers. In 1977, Mushroom released about 50,000 copies of this LP, which had a disclaimer notice on the back. We do not need to get into why, because you probably already know the reason from reading the other reviews. Descriptions of the ''77 version; "Heartless" has rough lead vocals but great guitar work by Fisher and Leese. "Without You" has so-so vocals that were polished up for the ''78 re-release. "Just the Wine" had a mellotron/Moog synthesizer solo replaced by a flute solo on the ''78 version. "Magazine" had :30 cut out in the ''78 version where a radio being tuned was originally heard and a faint part of the second guitar bridge in "Magic Man" was heard. "Devil Delight" lacks the echo of Ann''s voice singing "Devil, Devil" as on the ''78 version. "Here Song" remains the same on the ''77 and ''78 versions. "Mother Earth Blues" has two guitar solos on the ''77 version by Leese and Fisher, the ''78 version has only the Leese solo (as noted in the album liner notes), plus Ann imitating Robert Plant''s vocals on "You Shook Me" was elimintaed on the ''78 version. "I''ve Got The Music In Me" seemed the same. With all these oddities, both versions are good, however, the "guitar nucleus" of the band is displayed more prominently on the original Mushroom 1977 version. UPDATE; JAN 26. 2010 - It is getting very hard to find the LP with the disclaimer on it. I have seen them on Ebay recently, and they now are around $75. People are also trying to pass off the 1978 version as the 1977 version by sending the 1978 album in the 1977 sleeve, so be careful. It is worth trying to find the original Mushroom release while you still can, and somehow get an MP3 copy of it.

This was supposed to be Heart''s second album, but was recalled and became a rare album. This is my favorite Heart album. I have two copies of this album on compact disc with decent sound, but when I got this edition I was blown away, great job of remastering and the packaging is better then the original album, lyrics, pictures, and who play''s what on songs.everyone has heard" Heartless",but Heart''s version of " Without You" is great the title song "Magazine" is my favorite Heart song, and to close the set they do a live version of the Kiki Dee song "I got the music in me"get this one before it"s gone

The only thing that could make this release any better would be for it to have used the original mix of the album. Given that the band rejected that mix after a brief release, it''s not likely we''ll ever have it on cd. This release was obviously prepared with great care and has never sounded as good as it does here. The mastering is spot-on perfect and this release sounds great on headphones or cranked through a receiver. This is as good as it can possibly get for "Magazine."

I recently felt nostalgic and bought up a bunch of Heart CD''s that I had on Vinyl back in the day. This album I actually had two of one with the album cover printed on the album itself and one with black vinyl that I actually played on my turntable (and an 8 Track, but I digress)

At the time I was wildly in love with Ann Wilson so I wanted everything I could get with her on it. Over the years I have had my LP collection borrowed/ stolen/ given away and until last month I hadn''t heard Magazine for years.

I remembered what I really loved about this album is the tight harmonies that seem to only come from siblings. Some great songs brought back some great memories, cruising in my old Scirocco, great dates, and great road trips. I recall now that Magazine was a big part of the soundtrack of my life in the late 70''s.

This album has a very famous story behind it; involving legal disputes, armed guards and session musicians. I like to listen to the album on musical merit however, and consider it as Heart''s fairly awesome one-point-fifth album. Basically if you enjoyed any of Hearts first four Classic albums, ''Dreamboat Annie,'' ''Little Queen,'' ''Dog & Butterfly,'' or ''Bebe Le Strange,'' then your pretty much guaranteed to enjoy this. The album opens with ''Heartless,'' which is a traditional, heavy opener like all of their early albums. Straight after that, Heart''s heaviest ever song can be found, the menacing and reverb-y ''Devil Delight,'' which is worth the price of the disc alone. The quieter ''Just The Wine,'' and ''Here Song,'' are brilliant emotional folky numbers that would fit right onto any of Heart''s first three albums and help bridge the gap rather well indeed. A special mention is deserved for the title track ''Magazine,'' which comes across as Led Zeppelin-meets-Elton John (which is probably what they were going for considering the songs they cover on their reunion dvds)which clocks in at over 6 minutes and goes through a range of moods and tempos. The only problem with this album is that ''Mother Earth Blues,'' (the live blues jam) doesn''t stand up to repeat listens as much as the rest of the album does, and it could be argued that Heart while originals are awesome the album would flow better as an EP of those songs, without the extra cover songs. However if your not splitting hairs and actively looking for reasons why this isn''t a great Heart album you''ll just find a well written, enjoyable classic rock album. I highly recomend this album to any new Heart fans who want more from the classic period.
